For many travellers, the first sight of snow on the deodar forests of Himachal Pradesh is the highlight of a winter trip to India. A Shimla Manali tour by car from Delhi takes you from the plains to colonial Shimla, the apple valleys of Kullu and the snowfields of Solang in less than a week. Here is our honest guide for winter 2026–27: when snow really falls, the routes, a 6-day itinerary, the real Shimla Manali taxi cost and why the right driver matters more in the mountains than anywhere else.
When Does It Snow in Shimla and Manali?
Snow is never guaranteed, but the pattern over the last decades is fairly reliable:
| Month | Shimla | Manali and Solang |
|---|---|---|
| November | Crisp, clear and cold; rare snow | Cold; snow on the high peaks, sometimes in Solang late in the month |
| December | First snowfall possible late in the month | Good chance of snow in Solang and around Manali |
| January | Best chance of fresh snowfall | Peak snow; Solang usually fully covered |
| February | Snow possible; melting by the end | Snow on the ground, sunnier days |
| March | Spring returns | Snow still around Solang and Sissu early in the month |

| Shimla to Manali | ≈ 250 km | 7–8 hours | Bilaspur, Mandi, the Beas river gorge and the Kullu valley |
| Manali to Delhi | ≈ 530 km | 11–13 hours | Kiratpur–Manali highway tunnels, Chandigarh, Ambala |
| Shimla to Kufri | ≈ 16 km | 40 minutes | Pine forests and winter snow |

The newer four-lane sections and tunnels on the Kiratpur–Manali highway have shortened the Shimla–Manali and Manali–Delhi drives, but mountain roads are still slow, and winter fog in the plains can add an hour in the early morning. Best Snow Points: Kufri, Narkanda, Solang and Sissu
Kufri (near Shimla)
The closest snow to Shimla, with pony rides, yak photos and toboggan slopes in winter. It gets busy at weekends, so go early.
Narkanda
About 60 km beyond Shimla and higher, so it often has snow when Shimla doesn’t. It has gentle ski slopes and wonderful views of the Himalayan range from Hatu Peak when the road is open.
Solang Valley (near Manali)
The most popular snow destination in Himachal in winter: skiing, snow scooters, paragliding on clear days and a ropeway to the upper slopes. Your hotel or driver can arrange snow boots and jackets on rent nearby.
Sissu and the Atal Tunnel
The Atal Tunnel opened in 2020 and brings the Lahaul valley within an hour of Manali. In winter it is the easiest way to see deep, untouched snow, but the road is closed after heavy snowfall and access is controlled by the authorities. Your driver will check each morning. Note that Rohtang Pass is closed in winter, normally from around November until May.
Ajay’s Insider Insight
"Keep one spare day in any winter hill trip. If it snows heavily, roads may close for a day while they are cleared. Guests with a flexible day enjoy the fresh snow; guests without one spend it worrying about their flight. And never plan to drive from Manali to Delhi on the same day as an international flight."
Shimla Manali Taxi Cost from Delhi
The 6-day Delhi – Shimla – Manali – Delhi round trip is about 1,300 km including local sightseeing. With a margin for snow detours, here is an estimated Shimla Manali taxi package cost with a private car and driver:
| Vehicle | Travellers | Rate | Est. 6-Day Car Cost |
|---|---|---|---|
| Maruti Dzire (Sedan) | 1 to 3 | ₹12/km | ≈ ₹16,800 |
| Toyota Rumion (MPV) | 3 to 5 | ₹16/km | ≈ ₹22,400 |
| Toyota Innova Crysta (SUV) | 4 to 6 | ₹19/km | ≈ ₹26,600 |
| Force Tempo Traveller | 9 to 16 | ₹30/km | ≈ ₹42,000 |
The quote includes the car, fuel and an experienced hill driver with his allowance, and lists tolls, the Himachal entry tax for outside vehicles and parking clearly. Hotels, snow activities, ropeway tickets and meals are extra. In some snow areas local rules allow only local taxis or 4x4 vehicles for the last stretch; when that happens we arrange it for you at the local rate. Winter Driving in Himachal: Why the Driver Matters
Mountain driving in winter is a skill. Ice forms on shaded bends in the early morning, trucks stop suddenly on narrow roads and fog sits on the plains around Ambala and Chandigarh. A good personal driver in India for the hills will:
- Start early, avoid driving after dark on mountain roads and plan around fog in the plains.
- Know which snow points are open each day and which roads are being cleared.
- Carry snow chains when needed and never take risks on black ice.
- Use low gears and engine braking on long descents to keep the car and passengers safe.
- Find good clean dhabas and restrooms on the way, and help with hotel check-ins and local guides.
All our hill drivers have years of experience on Himachal roads. For guests from abroad, we provide an English speaking chauffeur India visitors can rely on, and a safe private driver in India for women travelers, police-verified with 24/7 support from our Delhi office.
What to Pack for a Winter Hill Trip
- Warm layers: thermals, a fleece and a down jacket. Nights in Manali go below zero in January.
- Waterproof shoes with grip, or rent snow boots at Solang.
- Gloves, a woollen cap and sunglasses: snow glare is strong at altitude.
- Sunscreen and lip balm for the dry mountain air.
- Travel sickness tablets if you feel the bends; tell your driver and he will take it slowly.
- Cash: card and UPI work in towns, but small snow-point stalls often want cash.
Combine the Hills with the Golden Triangle
Many international guests pair snow in the Himalayas with the Taj Mahal and Rajasthan in one trip. Start with a Golden Triangle Tour with english speaking driver, the classic Delhi - Agra - Jaipur golden triangle tour, then head north to Shimla and Manali with the same driver. If you only have a day before flying out, a Same day Delhi to Agra tour is the perfect finish. Coming from Rajasthan? A Same day Jaipur to Delhi tour can bring you back to Delhi for the hills, and a Same day Jaipur to Pushkar tour adds a holy lake town to your trip.

Frequently Asked Questions
When is the best time to see snowfall in Shimla and Manali?
Fresh snowfall is most likely from late December to February. Manali and Solang Valley usually get snow earlier and keep it longer than Shimla. December can be dry and sunny, so if snow is the main goal, January is the safest month.
How long does it take to drive from Delhi to Manali?
Delhi to Manali is about 530 km and takes 11 to 13 hours by car. Most guests break the journey in Shimla on the way up or drive Delhi to Manali in one long day and return via Shimla.
Is Rohtang Pass open in winter?
No. Rohtang Pass is normally closed to tourists from around November until May because of heavy snow. In winter, Solang Valley and, when the road is open, Sissu beyond the Atal Tunnel are the main snow points from Manali.
Is it safe to drive to Shimla and Manali in winter?
Yes, with an experienced hill driver, a well-maintained car and a flexible plan. After heavy snowfall some roads close for a day or two while they are cleared. Our drivers check road and weather updates every morning and never push on in unsafe conditions.
Which car is best for a Shimla Manali trip?
An Innova Crysta is the most comfortable choice for families on mountain roads, with more power, space and ground clearance. A sedan is fine for couples on the main highways. Groups of 9 or more travel in a Tempo Traveller.
Can I combine Shimla and Manali with the Golden Triangle?
Yes. Many guests spend 4 or 5 days on the Golden Triangle (Delhi, Agra, Jaipur) and 5 or 6 days in the hills, using the same private car and English-speaking driver throughout.
