Agra and Fatehpur Sikri Tour from Delhi: The Taj Mahal and Akbar’s Lost Capital

Most visitors to Agra see the Taj Mahal and Agra Fort and head home. Just an hour away stands one of the most remarkable places in India: Fatehpur Sikri, a complete red sandstone city built by Emperor Akbar and abandoned after only about 15 years. An Agra and Fatehpur Sikri tour from Delhi lets you see the three great Mughal UNESCO sites of the region in one trip by private car.

What Is Fatehpur Sikri?

In the 1570s, Akbar built a new capital at Sikri to honour the Sufi saint Salim Chishti, who had foretold the birth of his son. He named it Fatehpur, the “City of Victory”. Palaces, courts, a great mosque and a harem were built in red sandstone, blending Persian, Hindu and Jain styles. Within about 15 years the court moved away, most likely because of water shortages, and the city was left almost exactly as it was. Today it is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and feels like walking through a Mughal court frozen in time.

Same Day Agra and Fatehpur Sikri Itinerary

Time Plan
6:00 AM Pickup from your hotel in Delhi, Noida or Gurgaon
9:30 AM Taj Mahal with your guide (about 2.5 hours)
12:15 PM Agra Fort (about 1.5 hours)
1:45 PM Lunch in Agra
2:45 PM Drive to Fatehpur Sikri (about 1 hour)
3:45 PM Fatehpur Sikri palace complex, Jama Masjid and Buland Darwaza (about 2 hours)
5:45 PM Return drive to Delhi
9:00 to 9:30 PM Drop-off at your hotel in Delhi

It is a long day, but the private car makes it manageable: you can nap between stops and the driver handles parking and traffic. Fatehpur Sikri closes at sunset, so in winter the timing is tighter and we may suggest visiting it before Agra Fort.

What to See at Fatehpur Sikri

The Royal Palace Complex (ticketed)

  • Diwan-i-Aam: the hall of public audience, where Akbar heard petitions from ordinary people.
  • Diwan-i-Khas: famous for its single carved central pillar, where Akbar is said to have held discussions with scholars of many faiths.
  • Panch Mahal: a five-storey open pavilion that caught the breeze for the royal ladies.
  • Jodha Bai’s Palace: the largest palace in the complex, with clear Rajput and Gujarati influences.
  • Anup Talao: an ornamental pool with a platform in the centre, where the court musician Tansen is said to have performed.

The Mosque Complex (free entry)

  • Buland Darwaza: the “Gate of Magnificence”, about 54 metres high, built to mark Akbar’s victory in Gujarat. It is one of the tallest gateways in the world.
  • Jama Masjid: one of the largest mosques in India, with a vast courtyard.
  • Tomb of Salim Chishti: a delicate white marble tomb with carved stone screens, where visitors tie threads to make a wish.

Ajay’s Insider Insight

"Fatehpur Sikri has many unofficial guides and sellers near the mosque. Hire only a licensed guide with an ID card, or let your driver arrange one for you in Agra. And take socks: the courtyard stone at the Jama Masjid gets very hot in the afternoon."

The Easier 2-Day Version

If a 15-hour day sounds like too much, add one night in Agra. See Agra Fort and Mehtab Bagh at sunset on day one, then the Taj Mahal at sunrise and Fatehpur Sikri on the way back to Delhi on day two. Our overnight Agra tour guide explains this plan in detail.

Going on to Rajasthan? Fatehpur Sikri is on the road from Agra to Jaipur, so on a Golden Triangle tour you can visit it without any detour at all, along with the Abhaneri stepwell.

Tour Cost and Tickets

Adding Fatehpur Sikri adds about 80 km to a same day Agra trip, for a total of around 560 to 580 km:

Vehicle Rate Est. Day Trip Cost
Maruti Dzire (Sedan) ₹12/km ≈ ₹7,000
Toyota Rumion (MPV) ₹16/km ≈ ₹9,300
Toyota Innova Crysta (SUV) ₹19/km ≈ ₹11,000
Force Tempo Traveller ₹30/km ≈ ₹17,400

Toll tax and parking are extra at actuals. Approximate monument fees for foreign visitors: Taj Mahal about ₹1,100 (plus about ₹200 for the mausoleum), Agra Fort about ₹650 and the Fatehpur Sikri palace complex about ₹610. Indian citizens pay around ₹50 for each. Check the official ASI website for current fees.

Tips for Fatehpur Sikri

  • Wear easy-to-remove shoes for the mosque and carry socks for the hot stone.
  • Dress modestly: shoulders and knees covered at the Jama Masjid.
  • Bring water and a hat: there is little shade in the courtyards.
  • Avoid Friday for the full trip: Fatehpur Sikri is open, but the Taj Mahal is closed.

Frequently Asked Questions

How far is Fatehpur Sikri from Agra?

Fatehpur Sikri is about 37 km west of Agra, around 1 hour by car. It lies on the road towards Jaipur, which makes it an easy stop on a Golden Triangle tour.

Can I see the Taj Mahal, Agra Fort and Fatehpur Sikri in one day from Delhi?

Yes, with an early start around 6:00 AM. You will be back in Delhi around 9:00 to 9:30 PM. It is a full day, so many guests prefer to add one night in Agra.

How much time do I need at Fatehpur Sikri?

Allow about 2 hours: around an hour and a half for the royal palace complex and 30 minutes for the Jama Masjid, Buland Darwaza and the tomb of Salim Chishti.

Is Fatehpur Sikri open on Fridays?

Yes. Fatehpur Sikri and Agra Fort are open every day. Only the Taj Mahal is closed on Fridays, so a Friday trip can include Agra Fort and Fatehpur Sikri but not the Taj.
