A same day Agra tour from Delhi is the most popular day trip in India, and for good reason. With the Yamuna Expressway, you can leave Delhi after an early breakfast, stand in front of the Taj Mahal by mid-morning, walk through Agra Fort after lunch and be back at your Delhi hotel for dinner. Here is exactly how we plan the day for our guests with a private car and English-speaking driver.
Is a Same Day Agra Tour Worth It?
If you only have a few days in India, absolutely. Agra’s two headline sights, the Taj Mahal and Agra Fort, can both be seen properly in one day. A same day trip suits you if:
- You are staying in Delhi for business or a short stopover
- You do not want to pack up and change hotels
- You have a flight from Delhi the next day
- You are travelling with family and prefer one familiar base
If you want sunset at Mehtab Bagh, a relaxed sunrise visit or extra sights like the Baby Taj, read our guide to the overnight Agra tour from Delhi instead.

Seeing the Taj Mahal the Right Way
The Taj Mahal opens about 30 minutes before sunrise and closes about 30 minutes before sunset. A few things make the visit much better:
- Use the East Gate. It usually has shorter queues than the West Gate, and your driver will drop you at the electric shuttle point.
- Buy tickets online. Booking on the official ASI website saves time at the counter. Add the mausoleum ticket if you want to go inside the main tomb.
- Pack light. Food, tripods, drones, large bags and many electronic items are not allowed inside. Leave them safely locked in your car with the driver.
- Walk the full garden. Most people photograph the Taj from the main gate and the central bench. The side walkways and the mosque on the west side are quieter and just as beautiful.
Ajay’s Insider Insight
"I tell every guest the same thing: do the Taj Mahal first and Agra Fort second. By early afternoon the Taj gets crowded and the marble gets very hot under your feet in summer. Agra Fort has more shade and handles the afternoon crowd much better."
Agra Fort and Other Stops
Agra Fort is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the seat of the Mughal emperors for generations. Don’t miss the Diwan-i-Aam, the Diwan-i-Khas and the Musamman Burj, the octagonal tower where Shah Jahan spent his last years looking out at the Taj Mahal across the Yamuna.
If you still have energy after the fort, you can add one more stop:
- Mehtab Bagh: a garden across the river with a peaceful, crowd-free view of the Taj Mahal.
- Itmad-ud-Daulah (the Baby Taj): a small marble tomb with some of the finest inlay work in Agra.
- A marble inlay workshop: watch artisans at work. Our drivers never force shopping stops, so this is entirely your choice.

Same Day Agra Tour Cost by Car
The Delhi – Agra – Delhi round trip, including driving between monuments in Agra, is about 480 to 500 km. Because we charge per kilometre, your car cost stays the same whether one person travels or the car is full:
| Vehicle | Best For | Rate | Est. Day Trip Cost |
|---|---|---|---|
| Maruti Dzire (Sedan) | 1 to 3 travellers | ₹12/km | ≈ ₹6,000 |
| Toyota Rumion (MPV) | 3 to 5 travellers | ₹16/km | ≈ ₹8,000 |
| Toyota Innova Crysta (SUV) | 4 to 6 travellers | ₹19/km | ≈ ₹9,500 |
| Force Tempo Traveller | 9 to 16 travellers | ₹30/km | ≈ ₹15,000 |
The rate covers the car, fuel, an English-speaking chauffeur and the driver’s allowance. Toll tax and parking are extra at actuals. See every vehicle on our car rental with driver page.
Monument Tickets and Opening Days
- Taj Mahal: about ₹1,100 for foreign visitors and ₹50 for Indian citizens, plus about ₹200 to enter the main mausoleum. Closed on Fridays.
- Agra Fort: about ₹650 for foreign visitors and ₹50 for Indian citizens. Open every day.
- Mehtab Bagh and Itmad-ud-Daulah: smaller fees, open every day.
Fees change from time to time, so check the official ASI ticketing website before your trip. Children under 15 enter free.
Practical Tips for the Day
- Never plan it on a Friday. This is the most common mistake we see.
- Carry your passport or ID. You may need it for tickets and at security.
- Dress for walking. Comfortable shoes, a hat and sunscreen. Shoulders and knees covered is respectful at the mosque inside the Taj complex.
- Winter fog: from late December to mid-January, early morning fog can slow the expressway. We may leave a little later for safety.
- Hydrate. Bottled water is always in your car, and summer afternoons in Agra are very hot.

What time should I leave Delhi for a same day Agra tour?
Leave between 6:00 and 7:00 AM to reach the Taj Mahal by about 10:00 AM. If you want sunrise at the Taj, leave around 3:00 AM.
Is the Taj Mahal open every day?

The round trip with local sightseeing is around 480 to 500 km. At our rates that is roughly ₹6,000 in a Maruti Dzire, ₹8,000 in a Toyota Rumion and ₹9,500 in an Innova Crysta, with toll tax and parking extra at actuals.
Do I need a guide at the Taj Mahal?
It is optional, but a licensed guide brings the history and the inlay work to life and helps you through the queues. Your driver can arrange a government-approved guide for you in Agra.
