Overnight Agra Tour from Delhi: Sunset, Sunrise and the Taj Mahal Without the Rush

A same day trip shows you the Taj Mahal. An overnight Agra tour from Delhi lets you actually enjoy it. With one night in Agra, you can watch the sun set behind the Taj from across the river, walk in at first light the next morning before the crowds, and still be back in Delhi by the evening of day two. Here is how we plan a relaxed 2-day Agra tour by private car.

Why Stay Overnight in Agra?

  • The Taj in two lights: golden at sunset, soft pink at sunrise. Most day-trippers see it only at midday.
  • Smaller crowds: at opening time the gardens are close to empty, which is the best time for photographs.
  • No 14-hour day: the drive is split into two easy halves, which is much kinder for children and older travellers.
  • More to see: time for the Baby Taj, Mehtab Bagh and Fatehpur Sikri, which most same day tours have to skip.

2-Day Overnight Agra Itinerary

Day 1: Delhi to Agra, Agra Fort and Sunset at Mehtab Bagh

  • 8:00 AM: Relaxed pickup from your Delhi hotel or the airport.
  • 11:30 AM: Arrive in Agra and check in or leave your bags at the hotel.
  • 12:30 PM: Lunch, then Agra Fort in the afternoon.
  • 3:30 PM: Itmad-ud-Daulah, the delicate marble “Baby Taj” on the east bank of the Yamuna.
  • 5:00 PM: Mehtab Bagh for sunset with the Taj Mahal reflecting across the river.
  • Evening: Dinner and overnight in Agra. If you like, catch a cultural show such as Mohabbat the Taj.

Day 2: Taj Mahal at Sunrise and Back to Delhi

  • Sunrise: Enter the Taj Mahal as the gates open, about 30 minutes before sunrise.
  • 9:00 AM: Back to the hotel for breakfast and check-out.
  • 10:30 AM: Optional detour to Fatehpur Sikri, about one hour from Agra, or head straight back.
  • Evening: Drop-off at your Delhi hotel or the airport.

Visiting on a Friday? Swap the days. The Taj Mahal is closed on Fridays, so plan your sunrise visit for the Saturday morning.

Ajay’s Insider Insight

"Guests who stay overnight always tell me the sunrise visit was the highlight of their trip. Ask for a hotel within a short drive of the East Gate, and your driver will have you at the ticket line before it forms."

Taj Mahal at Sunrise, Sunset and Moonlight

Sunrise is the quietest and coolest time to visit the Taj. In winter, morning mist can hide the dome for the first half hour, which makes for moody photographs, so stay a little longer for it to clear.

Sunset is best from Mehtab Bagh, the Mughal garden directly opposite the Taj on the far bank of the Yamuna. It costs very little, is rarely crowded and gives you the view without a single person in front of the monument.

Moonlight viewing is possible on five nights a month around the full moon, except Fridays and during Ramadan. Tickets are limited and are sold a day in advance at the ASI office in Agra. If your dates match, tell us when you book and we will plan the trip around it.

Where to Stay in Agra

  • Near the East Gate (Taj Ganj and Fatehabad Road): the best area for an early sunrise visit, with options from simple hotels to five-star resorts with Taj-view rooms.
  • Budget: clean 2 to 3-star hotels from around ₹2,000 to ₹4,000 a night.
  • Mid-range: comfortable 4-star hotels from around ₹5,000 to ₹9,000.
  • Luxury: Taj-view rooms at premium hotels can run to ₹20,000 and well above.

We are happy to suggest hotels that match your budget, and your driver knows which ones have easy car access.

Overnight Agra Tour Cost

An overnight Delhi – Agra – Delhi trip covers about 550 km including local sightseeing, or a little more if you add Fatehpur Sikri. Estimated car and driver cost at our per-km rates:

Vehicle Rate Est. 2-Day Cost
Maruti Dzire (Sedan) ₹12/km ≈ ₹6,600
Toyota Rumion (MPV) ₹16/km ≈ ₹8,800
Toyota Innova Crysta (SUV) ₹19/km ≈ ₹10,450
Force Tempo Traveller ₹30/km ≈ ₹16,500

The driver’s night stay and meals are included, so there is no extra overnight charge. Toll tax, parking, your hotel and monument tickets are extra. For a fuller budget, see our Golden Triangle tour cost breakdown.

Continue to Jaipur Instead of Returning

Many guests realise in Agra that they want to keep going. From Agra, Jaipur is about 240 km, with Fatehpur Sikri and the Abhaneri stepwell on the way. That turns your overnight trip into the classic Golden Triangle tour with the same car and the same driver. Tips for Your Agra Stay

  • Book the sunrise ticket online the night before so you can walk straight to security.
  • Keep valuables in the hotel safe or locked in the car with your chauffeur.
  • Try Agra’s food: petha (the local sweet) and a Mughlai dinner are a must.
  • Best season: October to March has the most comfortable weather. See the best time to visit North India.
